Red Sky Deluxe
Thorell’s latest model is an archtop that’s finished with a natural vintage-burst spruce for the top; maple for the back, sides, and neck; Bocote binding; and ebony for the fretboard. The fretboard is graced with Thorell’s “Z” block inlay. The Thorell Thunder Bowl pickup that’s installed is a DeArmond-style single-coil with fully shielded, under-mount controls.
The Grand
This large-sized flattop is meant to deliver the open and powerful sound of a dreadnought, yet still provide the response characteristics needed for modern fingerstyle and picking. Stunning wood appointments abound: The Grand shown here features Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides, cocobolo binding, Adirondack spruce for the top, and a figured mahogany neck that’s topped with an ebony fretboard. The delicate fretboard inlays have a combination of black mother-of-pearl, aluminum, and honey jasper.
FV Premier
The FV Premier was originally commissioned by jazz great Frank Vignola and built with the intention of providing versatile and clear acoustic tone with a fusion of Gypsy, archtop, and flattop sounds. This FV Premier boasts Lutz spruce for the top, figured cocobolo binding, walnut for the back and sides, and a mahogany neck that’s capped with an ebony fretboard. For electronics, the FV Premier is outfitted with a blade-style P-90 called the San Rafael.
Sweet E
Thorell’s Sweet “E” model is a traditional X-braced archtop inspired by the great masters of this building genre, and each guitar is custom voiced to a player’s needs and desires. The soundboard on this vintage-burst finished beauty is spruce; while the back, sides, binding, and neck are carved from maple. The Sweet “E” is equipped with one of Thorell’s floating, hum-cancelling Lone Peak pickups.
